Group Session: 2025 Media Predictions
This month’s Media Data Collaborative session was a deep dive into the challenges and opportunities legacy media publishers face in a rapidly evolving digital landscape. From leveraging AI tools like Chat GPT to exploring audience engagement through data-driven strategies, the conversation illuminated key areas for innovation in news production. Here’s my take on the session and actionable recommendations for publishers.
Session Highlights
The discussion around AI underscored its transformative potential. Tools like Chat GPT can efficiently generate content in multiple formats, opening doors for repurposing articles into podcasts, video scripts, or bullet-point summaries.
The idea of AI agents facilitating micropayments for content offers an intriguing glimpse into how we might monetize digital publishing more effectively. See my interview with Greg Krehbiel for more about his predictions in this lane: https://datajoe.substack.com/p/the-future-of-publishing-where-ai
We also explored the rise of visual content, particularly video, as audiences shift away from text-heavy formats. While this transition challenges traditional article-based models, it also opens new pathways for engagement and sponsorship opportunities.
One thought-provoking idea came from Kenny Katzgrau who is dreaming about the idea of creating a “closed garden” for his hyper-local Red Bank Green magazine, requiring login to access the site. Might sound scary, but a login-based system could enhance community involvement through native commenting and exclusive access to event calendars. This approach fosters loyalty but must balance user convenience with perceived value.
We had a good nugget of insight around this as well: Are we using our audience data to make life better for the audience, or to make money at the expense of their experience? This is where the big tech platforms have gone wrong, and this is where media doesn’t have to go wrong. This is paraphrased from something Andy Speter said.
